FAQ
Real questions.
Real answers.
The questions Jamaican homeowners and businesses actually ask before they buy AC or solar — answered straight, no marketing fog.
Air conditioning
What size AC do I need for a 12×12 bedroom in Jamaica?
A 12×12 ft (~144 sq ft) bedroom in Jamaica typically needs a 9,000–12,000 BTU/h split AC. Add capacity if the room has direct afternoon sun, large windows, a high ceiling, or more than two regular occupants. We size every install on-site rather than from a chart — heat load varies a lot between Kingston, the cockpit country, and the coast.
How long does an AC installation take?
A standard residential split unit takes a single technician about 4–6 hours from arrival to commissioning. Multi-zone or high-wall installs that need scaffolding can run a full day. We give you a window before we start and call if anything changes.
Why does my AC freeze up?
The two common causes in Jamaica are a clogged filter (most cases) and low refrigerant from a slow leak. Both are fixable on a single service call. We also see freeze-ups from oversized units short-cycling — if your AC is too big for the room, it cools too fast, never dehumidifies, and ices the coil.
Do you service all 14 parishes?
Yes. We have certified technicians and stocked service vans covering every parish — Kingston, St. Andrew, St. Thomas, Portland, St. Mary, St. Ann, Trelawny, St. James, Hanover, Westmoreland, St. Elizabeth, Manchester, Clarendon, and St. Catherine. Same-day emergency service is available for Kingston, St. Andrew, and St. Catherine; other parishes get next-day priority.
What's the warranty on a Mutabank install?
Three-year manufacturer warranty on parts (compressor, board, sensors), and a one-year labour warranty on our installation work. If something we did fails inside that window, we come back at no charge — no argument, no callout fee.
Solar & JPS
What is JPS net billing and how does it work?
Net billing lets you sell surplus solar power back to JPS at a wholesale rate set by the OUR. You stay connected to the grid, your system feeds the grid when you're producing more than you use, and JPS credits your account at the avoided-cost rate (lower than retail). It's not full net metering — you don't get a 1-for-1 swap. Most of our customers' savings come from offsetting their own daytime usage, not selling to JPS.
How much can I save on my JPS bill with solar?
Most residential customers see a 60–80% reduction in their monthly JPS bill after a properly sized install — based on 240+ installs we've completed since 2024. Exact savings depend on your roof area, daytime usage pattern, and whether you add battery storage. We model your specific bill before quoting.
Do I need a JPS-approved inverter?
Yes — for grid-tie or hybrid systems, your inverter must be on the JPS-approved list to interconnect legally. The Mutabank 10 kW hybrid inverter we install is JPS-approved and compatible with the standard Jamaica 230/240V single-phase service.
Can solar power my whole house during a JPS outage?
Only if you have battery storage. A grid-tie solar system without batteries shuts off during an outage for safety (anti-islanding). Hybrid systems with batteries — like our standard Mutabank 10 kW build — keep your essentials running through outages. Most customers size their battery for fans, lights, fridge, and one AC zone; whole-house backup costs more.
How long does a solar installation take?
A typical 5–10 kW residential install is two days on-site once the panels and inverter are at the property. Permitting and JPS interconnection approval take an additional 2–6 weeks depending on parish and current JPS load. We handle the paperwork.
Mutabank
What is Mutabank?
Mutabank is the inverter AC and hybrid solar inverter line we install across Jamaica — wall-mounts (A81), wide-throw splits (LH), floor-standing columns (LD), and 10 kW hybrid inverters. We chose it because the units are spec'd for tropical ambient temperatures (rated to 60°C outdoor), JPS voltage swings, and salt-air corrosion that destroys generic imports.
How quiet is a Mutabank wall-mount?
The A81 wall-mount runs at 22 dB on whisper mode — about as loud as rustling leaves. Standard mode is in the 28–34 dB range depending on fan speed.
Are Mutabank parts available in Jamaica?
Yes. We stock common service parts (boards, sensors, capacitors, fan motors) at our Kingston shop and rotate stock across our service vans. Most repairs are completed in a single visit.
Process & pricing
How does pricing work?
We quote before we start. The price you accept is the price you pay unless the scope changes — and a scope change is a conversation, not a surprise. We don't do hidden callout fees; site visits inside Kingston Metro and St Catherine are free for jobs we end up taking.
Do you offer financing?
We work with two local financing partners on installations over $300,000 JMD — terms typically 12 to 36 months. Apply during your quote and we'll route you to the partner that fits best.
What forms of payment do you accept?
Bank transfer, debit card, credit card, and cash. We do not accept cheques. For commercial accounts we issue 30-day invoices on request.
